Paper Patterns

I was walking by this Sta Travel in downtown Palo Alto, which I pass every day on my way to lunch, when I noticed the pattern of shadows cast by the advertisements posted on the glass.

I love street photography because sometimes you find beauty in that which you most take for granted. Sometimes I forget how beautiful a city it is I live in and what wonderful and interesting people inhabit it.

Grandpa inspects some lovely pearls as hostage granddaughter daydreams

I passed by this girl and her grandpa at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Grandpa was in Ye Olde Pearl Shoppe investigating either the pearls or the perfect curvature of the shopkeeper’s audacious cleavage. In the meantime, the granddaughter was far away, in her own place.

What could have been on her mind? The upcoming grammar quiz? The incontestable existence of Cooties in this world? The relative merits of Rocky Road vs. Mocha Almond Fudge ice-cream? I don’t know… but I do know that not even amazing cleavage can convince me to buy pearls.

The Shortest Shorts

What am I writing, and who took my pants?

I found this gentleman in my errant journeys through Chinatown. His shorts were mighty and his tennis shoes bellowed. The combination of loud and soft in this scene are what drew me to taking the shot.

If you look at the top half of the photo, I could have titled the shot “Philosopher” or something profound like that… his quizzical expression, the notepad (what is he writing), the shop in the middle of Chinatown (what strange, wonderful, and inexpensive goods could be sold inside?). And yet, the lower half of the photo tells me that there is something more to this philosopher… that dash of San Francisco which, like MSG, is both salty and delicious.

10-16-2009 Street Photography

Hi folks! I had a great day in San Francisco yesterday (10-16-2009). It was an epic journey: I walked from the Caltrain station to Market Street, from there to Union Square, then through all of Chinatown, up to Coit Tower and down the other side, then I walked along the waterfront till I hit Pier 39.

Today I experimented with a few different lenses: 85mm 1.8, 35MM F2, and 50MM F1.4. EXIF information is available for anybody who is curious. I am very happy with my Canon 5D.

2. I passed by this girl on Market street. She caught my eye because of her elegant outfit and her sassy look.

Interesting story on this one. As I was passing by this girl and her dad, I took around 5-7 shots as I walked past her. The girl started yelling “Daddy! Daddy! Somebody is taking pictures of me!!”. The good news is that, being Chinese, my paparazzi camouflage was impeccable. By simply standing near my fellow countrymen and placing my camera out of view, I became invisible in a sea of similar faces.

It also helped that I walk very fast, and by the time the girl was pointing me out I was half a block ahead of them.

San Francisco Mission District

These are some photos I took in the Mission District of San Francisco on a recent trip. All of these shots were with Canon 5D and either 35MM F2 or 50MM F1.4. I like primes because they are less obtrusive and force me to “zoom with my feet”.

Hi everybody!

First of all, thank you so much for checking out my new photojournalism blog. My name is Daniel Chui. I am a 24-year-old photographer who lives in the Bay Area, California. My passion is capturing life as it happens, out in the street or wherever I happen to be. I hope to be able to share that lust for stealing that “decisive moment” through this blog.
